EVERY PENNY COUNTS
Amid tragedy abroad, Salvation Army needs contributions to assist local people in need
Columbia, S.C., January 28, 2010—The State Employment Commission recently reported that the December unemployment rate was 12.6 percent, an increase from 12.3 percent in November. This increase in unemployment is driving more people in need of life sustaining assistance to The Salvation Army where basic human needs services are provided.
“Forty six families who had never sought help at The Salvation Army came looking for assistance in the month of December,” said Major Richard L. Jones, Area Coordinator at The Salvation Army in Columbia. “Sixty seven families who had never visited our office sought assistance in November.”
Services that The Salvation Army provides include serving a meal to the homeless and hungry seven days a week, distributing food boxes, paying heating bills during the winter months, counseling on spiritual issues, assisting with rent and utility payments and prescription drug costs. We know that with the devastating earthquake in Haiti, which The Salvation Army is responding to, that many donors are focusing their giving abroad, but The Salvation Army continues to need funds locally to help serve people in our own backyard. If you would like to make a donation to help local people who are homeless and families struggling to meet basic human needs, please mail a check to The Salvation Army, P.O. Drawer 2786, Columbia, SC 29202. Donations can also be made by visiting the local website at www.DoingtheMostGood.org.
